I once read that

Plato fielded several myths of the self divided. In the Symposium, he has Aristophanes argues that "each of us bears like a flatfish, the traces of having been cut in two." Aristophanes' myth ascribes human sexuality to an earlier division, which has left each searching for that which would restore a lost wholeness.
